A4DVARSystem for the Navy Coastal OceanModel. Part II: Strong andWeakConstraint Assimilation Experiments with Real Observations in Monterey Bay*

چکیده
A four-dimensional variational data assimilation (4DVAR) system was recently developed for the Navy CoastalOceanModel (NCOM). The systemwas tested in the first part of this study using synthetic surface and subsurface data. Here, a full range of real surface and subsurface data is considered following encouraging results from the preliminary test. The data include sea surface temperature and sea surface height from satellite, as well as subsurface observations from gliders deployed during the second Autonomous Ocean SamplingNetwork field experiment in California’sMonterey Bay. Data assimilation is carried out with strong and weak constraints, and results are compared against independent observations. This study clearly shows that the 4DVAR approach improves the free-running model simulation and that the weak constraint experiment has lower analysis errors than does the strong constraint version.

A 4DVAR System for the Navy Coastal Ocean Model. Part I: System Description and Assimilation of Synthetic Observations in Monterey Bay*
A 4D variational data assimilation systemwas developed for assimilating ocean observations with the Navy Coastal Ocean Model. It is described in this paper, along with initial assimilation experiments in Monterey Bay using synthetic observations. The assimilation system is tested in a series of twin data experiments to assess its ability to fit assimilated and independent observations by contro...
متن کاملSynergistic applications of autonomous underwater vehicles and regional ocean modeling system in coastal ocean forecasting
The potential for using synergistic combinations of measurements from autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and output from three-dimensional numerical models for studying the central California coastal region is demonstrated. Two case studies are used to illustrate the approach. In the first, propeller-driven AUV observations revealed a subsurface salinity minimum in northern Monterey Bay. A R...
متن کاملObserved and modeled bio‐optical, bioluminescent, and physical properties during a coastal upwelling event in Monterey Bay, California
[1] During spring and summer time, coastal upwelling influences circulation and ecosystem dynamics of the Monterey Bay, California, which is recognized as a National Marine Sanctuary. Observations of physical, bio‐optical properties (including bioluminescence) together with results from dynamical biochemical and bioluminescence models are used to interpret the development of the upwelling event...
متن کاملUsing High Frequency Radar Observations of the Ocean Surface and Objective Analyses of Onshore Observations to Estimate Winds over Monterey Bay, California
Winds in coastal areas are both important and difficult to measure. In recent years, radar has been used to determine near-surface ocean currents; several areas are currently instrumented with such radars. One of these is the Monterey Bay region in California where such measurements began in the mid 1990s. Additionally, objective analyses of wind fields have been available from the U. S. Geolog...
متن کاملAn examination of a multi-scale three-dimensional variational data assimilation scheme in the Kuroshio Extension using the naval coastal ocean model
The implementation of a multi-scale three dimensional variational (MS3DVAR) data assimilation scheme for use with the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM) in the Kuroshio Extension western boundary current region is presented here. This work leverages on Li et al. (2013), who initially developed this method. MS3DVAR data assimilation allows for the effective assimilation of both spatially coarse and...
